Two Cabinet members are reportedly lobbying for the return of Busan Universal Rail Inc. (BURI) as the maintenance provider of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), Philippine Star columnist Jarius Bondoc has revealed.

In his November 24 column, Bondoc said the lobbying efforts for BURI also include "a powerful lawyer and a congressman."

BURI was awarded a P3.8-billion maintenance contract by the then-Department of Transportation and Communications in 2015, under Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya.

The company, however, was accused of failing to meet its contract obligations despite being paid a handsome P54 million a month.

The Department of Transportation has terminated the contract with BURI.

In addition to lobbying for BURI's return, Bondoc said there are retired generals "angling to insert equally inept contractors."

He warned President Rodrigo Duterte against falling for these traps.

"The past Aquino admin had incurred Mega Manilans' wrath for the series of billion-peso MRT-3 contracts to Liberal Party mates. Duterte must not repeat the mistake," he said.
